Diabetes Fighter Foods

Glucose serves as an energy source in our muscles and tissues. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that acts as a key to allow sugar to enter cells and be used as energy. When this process doesn’t function properly, diabetes can occur.

When we consume foods that contain sugar or carbohydrates, such as grains or fruits, the pancreas releases insulin. Insulin signals cells to take up and use the sugar for energy, thus lowering and maintaining a balanced blood sugar level. When this balance is disrupted due to the absence or ineffectiveness of insulin, sugar cannot enter cells, causing an increase in blood sugar levels. Elevated blood sugar levels are one of the main causes of diabetes.

In recent years, diabetes, commonly known as sugar disease, has become increasingly prevalent. Turkey is one of the countries where this disease is rapidly increasing. It is estimated that there are currently over 7 million diabetes patients in our country.

In this article, I will talk about some foods that are diabetes fighters:

Cinnamon: It is one of the first foods that comes to mind when it comes to maintaining sugar balance while eating fruits or preparing recipes. Why? Cinnamon has a reducing effect on glucose absorption, preventing blood sugar spikes and related health problems. Its aroma is also effective in curbing cravings for sweets.

Turmeric: The curcumin compound found in turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. As a result, it exhibits antidiabetic effects by helping to stabilize blood sugar levels and minimize complications associated with diabetes.

Ginger: Ginger is also powerful in terms of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, similar to turmeric. It helps in balancing blood sugar levels and enhances metabolism, promoting fat burning. Additionally, it has a supportive effect on digestion by balancing stomach acid. You can consume it as a spice or as tea.
